Volunteer work

ANIMA engages a large number of volunteers throughout the year, whose contribution is invaluable and essential to our work.

The First Aid Station is open 365 days a year and, as wild animals arrive daily, there is always a need for volunteers.

Our need for volunteers increases in the spring and summer months, when we have a large number of young and exhausted animals to care for.

ANIMA’s volunteers:

  • Are trained in the care and handling of animals by our experienced and qualified staff.
  • Come into contact with wildlife, often with species that one rarely has the opportunity to see in real life.
  • Meet interesting people from Greece and abroad who work with us.

Our volunteers:

  • Participate in the daily routine at the First Aid Station in Kallithea. This may include:
    • cleaning the cages, boxes and crates and feeding the animals
    • cleaning and tidying the premises
  • They help with the work in the outdoor rehabilitation facilities (Kalivia Thorikou and the Botanical Garden in Chaidari).
  • They transport wild animals from the bus stations (Kifissos and Liosia), the ports (Piraeus, Lavrio and Rafina) and the airport to the First Aid Station in Kallithea and vice versa.
  • If they live outside Attica, they act as ANIMA’s “correspondents” by picking up the animals and sending them to us from their areas.
  • They staff ANIMA’s stands at events, informing and raising public awareness.
  • They participate in field activities (releases, reforestation, tree planting, wetland clearing, etc.).

Volunteers can help in as many ways as they wish.

It is important to know:

  • People aged 18 years or older and children from the age of 13 (parental or legal guardian consent required) can volunteer at ANIMA.
  • Volunteering at any wildlife care centre is physically and mentally demanding, requires seriousness and responsibility, and involves a lot of cleaning.
  • The animals we care for are wild. This means that we avoid talking to them, playing with them, petting and generally touching them unless absolutely necessary, as becoming habituated reduces their chances of survival in the wild and, therefore, their chances of being released.
