ANIMA employs a large number of volunteers throughout the year, whose contribution is valuable and essential to our work.
The First Aid Station is open 365 days a year and wild animals arrive daily, so there is always a need for volunteer work.
Our need for volunteers increases especially in the spring and summer, when we have a large volume of chicks and other young and exhausted animals to manage.
The volunteers of ANIMA:
- They are trained by our experienced and qualified staff in the care and handling of animals.
- They come into contact with wildlife, often with species that one rarely has the opportunity to see up close.
- They know interesting people who work near us, from Greece and abroad.
Our volunteers:
- They participate in the general work at the First Aid Station in Kallithea. These may include:
- feeding the animals and cleaning their living quarters
- the hygiene and tidiness of the premises
- They work in the outdoor recovery areas (Thorikos Huts and Botanical Garden in Haidari).
- They transport wild animals from the bus stations (Kifissos and Liosia), the ports (Piraeus, Lavrio and Rafina) and the airports to the first aid station of Kallithea and vice versa.
- If they are residents of a province, they act as ANIMA’s “correspondents” by picking up and sending the animals from their areas.
- They staff ANIMA’s stands at events organised or participated by the organisation, informing and raising public awareness.
- Participate in field activities (releases, reforestation, tree planting, wetland clearing, etc.).
Volunteers can take on one or multiple roles.
It is important to know:
- People 18 years old and older and children from 13 years old with the consent of a parent or guardian can volunteer at ANIMA.
- Volunteering at any wildlife care centre is demanding, takes seriousness and responsibility and often involves a lot of dirt and a lot of cleaning.
- The animals we care for are wild. This means that we avoid talking to them, playing with them, petting them and generally touching them unless necessary, as their familiarity with humans reduces their chances of survival in the wild and therefore their chances of being released.
